As is often the case in Liguria, the historic centre of Badalucco is row upon row of houses, starting from the top and descending, first steeply and then more gradually towards the river. It is a web of largely narrow lanes. Little light breaks through, with small slices of sky visible between the stones, cornices and roofs of the houses. There is a surprise at every turn. Eight hundred-year-old houses, historic gates and shops, important churches and few open spaces; a rare commodity in vertical Liguria.
